Brooks Smith will recount his experiences as a college student volunteering during the Mississippi Freedom Summer.
Mississippi Freedom Summer helped change America. Hundreds of lawyers, clergy, doctors and entertainers came into Mississippi at the invitation of the Student Non Violent Coordinating Committee (SNCC). SNCC also recruited and trained around 500 students to come to try to "open up Mississippi." Three of those volunteers, Mickey Schwerner, Andrew Goodman and James Chaney were murdered. Brooks Smith, a sophomore at Wesleyan University also volunteered to "open up Mississippi." Mr. Smith will share his experiences going door to door doing voter registration, being threatened and arrested, and living next door to Fannie Lou Hamer. Mr. Smith's presentation will also include a part of the documentary, Eyes on the Prize.
Registration is required.
The Franklin Park Branch is located just off Claremont Road on Clover Place right next door to the Franklin Park School.
